The goal of Katalyst Phase II is to increase employment and incomes in rural and urban areas in Bangladesh through braod-based and sustainable pro-poor growth. Its purpose is to increase the competitiveness of micro, small and medium enterprises through market improvements.

Katalyst developed an approach that has managed to unlock the potential of the private sector to grow and to create opportunities and employment for small enterprises, farmers and laborers. Katalyst sought entry/leverage points into the economy to induce information, innovation and best practices for higher productivity, to improve the functioning of input markets and marketing networks, and to improve the enabling environment. Katalyst built up an extensive network of private and public sector partners to achieve this, ranging from large agro-processors and telecom service providers to small compost producers, lead farmers, sector associations and local government. Working indirectly through these entry/leverage points ensured sustainability and outreach.

The programme is funded by CIDA, DFID, SDC and EKN (Netherlands) and implemented by SwissContact.
